The 1st-Class Service

Our 1st-Class Service programme provides students with full support throughout the Engineering application process.

It has very limited places, with priority going to those students we believe have the greatest academic potential, and so will benefit the most from our support.

Each student will receive support with their Engineering personal statement, ESAT, and interviews, as well as full strategic oversight from our director.

The 1st-Class Service has three tiers, in order to suit the needs of every student, and we offer a one-hour trial session for just £5:

Interview

If you make a strong application to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, or York, you will be invited to interview. Interviews are conducted virtually, and while the exact structure varies, students will typically have 1-2 Engineering interviews.

It is our conviction that the best way to prepare for these interviews is to replicate the experience as closely as possible through Engineering mock interviews. All of our Engineering mock interviews are conducted by Oxbridge Engineering tutors, graduates, and students.

Each session is 60 minutes, with 45 minutes spent on the interview portion, and 15 minutes on feedback. We have several packages to choose from:

Six interviews (6 hours)

Four interviews (4 hours)

One interview (1 hour)

Below are a selection of questions you can use to prepare yourself for your Engineering interviews. Ideally, work through them with a tutor, but failing that, ask a friend or family member to quiz you - it won't be as similar to the real thing, but it will still help you to get accustomed to the unique format and style of Engineering interviews.

ESAT

All Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial Engineering candidates, as well as UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering candidates, must sit the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admission Test). There are five ESAT modules Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Most Engineering courses will require candidates to answer Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics. Each module lasts 40 minutes and contains 27 multiple choice questions, and so the ESAT will last 120 minutes for most candidates.

Practice papers for the ESAT are available online, and so the best way to prepare is to work through every practice paper, and then go through them with an experienced tutor.

We offer ESAT tuition in 90-minute sessions due to the length of the papers.

The ESAT was introduced in 2024, and so there are not yet past papers available. However, a guide, specimen paper, and sample paper are available, as well as past papers from 2016 to 2023 for the ENGAA (Engineering Admissions Assessment), which was replaced by the ESAT. These can all be found below.

Personal Statement

A personal statement for Oxbridge or other top UK universities such as Imperial, King's, UCL, or York is unique, in that it has a greater focus on academics, and less reference to extracurriculars.

We tutor students through the writing of their personal statement with our Personal Statement Package. It includes two video sessions (1 hour each), and two further offline reviews. All tuition is carried out by a tutor who studied Engineering at a top university themselves, and so they have first-hand knowledge of what makes a successful statement.

If you're lacking inspiration, we have provided below a number of genuine Engineering personal statements which led to offers to read Engineering at Oxford or Cambridge. As these were written for previous application cycles, they do not adhere to the new UCAS guidelines that say that personal statements must be written as answers to three questions. Nevertheless, they give a useful picture of what an Oxbridge Engineering personal statement looks like, and how to discuss books, subjects, and concepts within it.

Testimonials

“Our daughter was tutored by Andrew, the founder of the company, who created an 18-month plan for her application, and then supported her every step of the way. Thanks to him, our daughter is now at Oxford studying Engineering.”

Emily W.

“I found all the advice on personal statements and ESAT helpful but the interview advice and mock interview I felt was especially helpful as it was the most accurate advice and mock I had to the real thing.”

Samuel P.

“Engineering Applications worked around our busy travel schedule to create a tuition plan for our son, and his tutor went above and beyond to answer his questions, discuss ideas with his, and generally boost his confidence. Highly recommend!”

Rachel L.

International Students

Applying for Engineering is hard. You must create a compelling personal statement, score highly in the admissions test, and impress tutors in several interviews. This can be especially difficult for international students, with no experience of the UCAS system or the Oxbridge process, and less of a network to rely on.

At Engineering Applications, we are very proud to have helped students from all over the world, including the USA, China, and the UAE to study Maths in the UK, working with families as well as schools and educational consultancies around the globe.

If you are based outside of the UK, and want to learn more about studying Engineering, get in touch with us at hello@engineeringapplications.co.uk or WhatsApp us at +44 20 8156 4942 and we would be happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Us

Engineering Applications is a boutique educational consultancy, the only one in the world with a singular focus on applications to study Engineering in the UK. This specificity allows us to have deep expertise, and specialist knowledge on relevant readings, Engineering personal statements, the ESAT, and Oxford/Cambridge/Imperial Engineering interviews.

Other educational consultancies aim to cover a near-infinite number of courses and universities, making it difficult for them to offer excellent guidance for any single course, and so they resort to offering generalised advice, and working with random tutors from the internet.

On the other hand, we work each year with a small number of Engineering hopefuls from the UK and overseas, and they are mentored one-on-one by our team, which is entirely composed of Engineering students and graduates from our network, and so we can prioritise getting the best outcome for applicants for this single course.

At the start of the year, we offer academic mentoring to our students, discussing readings and ideas which will broaden their knowledge of mathematics. We then begin working with them on the ESAT, going through past papers and teaching strategies to tackle the tricker questions. Alongside this, we help students with their personal statements, reviewing successive drafts until they're created an impactful statement. Finally, we offer mock interviews, each with a different tutor, so that our students are confident and experienced going into the real thing.
